The Annenberg diamond, a spectacular D color, flawless diamond of 32.01 carats, will be the highlight at Christies’ Jewels: The New York Sale next month.
Valued between US$3-5 million and boasting the impressive provenance synonymous with the Annenberg name, will be among the most highly-anticipated jewels offered at auction this year.
The square emerald-cut diamond is mounted on a ring and flanked by two pear-shaped diamonds weighing 1.50 and 1.61 carats.
François Curiel, chairman of Christie’s Europe and International head of jewels, said the diamond combines the best of the four Cs – “top colour, perfect clarity, ideal cut, and excellent weight”.
“If you add to this the impeccable provenance of the Annenberg name, you have one of the finest gems to appear on the market for many years.”
The Annenberg Diamond belonged to the late Leonore ‘Lee’ Annenberg, a passionate art collector and philanthropist who, along with her husband, Walter H Annenberg, entrusted billions of dollars to institutions devoted to education and the arts.
Mrs Annenberg was the former US chief of protocol during the Reagan administration, and served as chairwoman and president of the Annenberg Foundation. Her husband was a prominent newspaper publisher, broadcaster, diplomat and philanthropist .
The Jewels: The New York Sale will be held in New York on October 21, 2009

The Nationwide Jewellers buying group will celebrate a special milestone next month when the number of nationwide members who have taken part in the group’s annual Antwerp buying trip promotion reaches 300.
To celebrate the milestone, Nationwide will give all of its Platinum Reward Level members a travel voucher worth $1000 towards a trip to Antwerp in March 2010.
According to Nationwide managing director Colin Polkington, the group has been taking members to Antwerp for 10 years.
“Many of these members have made multiple trips, with the Antwerp promotion becoming a major event in their annual marketing calendar,” he said.
“The Antwerp program is one of the marketing ideas that the group picked up from Independent Jewelers Organisation, the largest jewellery buying group in the world.”
He said the City of Antwerp has officially recognised the buying group with two Mayoral Receptions in Antwerp’s historic City Hall building and members had been invited to the Hoge Raad voor Diamant (Diamond High Council) headquarters for special briefings and to receive free marketing support kits.
Nationwide’s March 2010 trip will include a visit to Bangkok and Vietnam.

Two of the ‘grand masters’ of the jewellery industry have combined their skills to create the Sea Shell Collection Masterpiece Ring for Nationwide Jewellers.
Gabi Tolkowsky, arguably the world’s most famous diamond cutter (The Centenary, The Golden Jubilee and The Pink Sunrise), developed the Sea Shell Collectionof diamonds in 2005.
Each stone in the Sea Shell collection “is cut individually based on the specific characteristics of the rough” and is packaged with a CD that has music based on a digitisation of the diamond’s gem print.
In 2008, Nationwide Jewellers brought Tolkowsky to the JAA Australian Jewellery Fair and introduced him to another grand master, Rex Steele Merten, a jewellery designer who has won four Diamonds International Awards and the only Australian jewellery designer to be admitted to the Diamonds International Academy.
