A diamond screening device due to hit the market next year from De Beers claims to be able to screen as many as 3,600 small diamonds per hour to determine mined or lab-grown origin.

The machine will specifically cater to the smallest melee sizes (down to 0.6mm) and operate automatically with minimal input from the user. De Beers says the system was developed in consultation with the industry and requires no additional equipment.

The device took 18 months to develop. It is unknown if De Beers will submit the machine to NDC’s Assure certification.
