The JAA has launched an online training course in robbery prevention for jewellery retailers and their staff.
JAA CEO Ian Hadassin said that armed robberies were increasing so the organisation was taking action to help the industry create a safer working environment and help meet the Federal Government’s OH&S workplace reforms in relation to robbery prevention.
Recent changes to OH&S laws means that employers are obligated to provide all staff with suitable robbery prevention training or risk penalties of up to $600,000 or five years imprisonment.
“When the Government announced these changes, we started discussions with the RISQ Group, fraud and security risk management specialists, on how we could effectively educate our industry on robbery prevention,” he said.
“We developed checklists, offered some face-to-face seminars and started work to develop an online training course suitable for both management and staff.”
“In testing for some months”, the course covers types of robberies and robbers; personal safety information and tips; general safety procedures; and general store operating procedures with regard to stock, customers and operations
It costs $59.95 per JAA staff member or $79.95 for non-members (group discounts do apply).
